The River Torrens which runs through Adelaide is dammed in the centre of town to form Torrens Lake, to allow for activities to take place including rowing, Popeye the tourist boat and these paddle boats. Everybody is aground at the moment with an accidental release of millions of litres of water from the dam earlier in the week. I walked around the day after and the level of the "pond" had gone down by over 2 meters. The local rag is calling it Stinky Flats. Very sad, just at the peak of Adelaide's tourist season. The lake will not be refilled until it rains again. Rain? Rain? what was that you said.
This not nautical situation is a sad metaphor for the state of the environment here in South Australia.
Tide's out...
ReplyDeleteThat's a shame about the water and must be so hard on those who rent the boats the tourists.
ReplyDeleteI hope you and yours have a good valentine's day.
Oops, "accidentally" drained? Will heads roll?
ReplyDeleteIt does look so sad. And I'll bet it smells like all get-out.
Great shot, nonetheless, and I learned something new about Australia again. Thanks!
How do you accidentally release millions of letres of water?
ReplyDeleteDefinitely not looking appealing to tourists :P
ReplyDeleteHappy V Day!!!
Nice choise for the theme. A shame about the water though.

ReplyDeleteNice choice but that is awful about the water.
ReplyDeleteHappy Weekend.
That is a sad sight. Like permanent low tide without the interesting species in the tide pools.
ReplyDeleteHappy Valentine's day.
Accidental release of millions of liters? Wow... so sad. Great choice for the theme though. Happy Valentine's Day and happy hunting.
ReplyDeleteIt is an interesting entry for this weeks theme. Happy weekend..
ReplyDeleteAn electrical fault caused it. You would think that they would have fail safe. They had to manually wind down the gates. It took over two hours.
ReplyDeleteI liked the picture with the exposed car, and was mighty impressed that it had made it into the middle of the lake.
ReplyDeleteWell, here's their chance to properly clean up all the debris that made it's way into the lake over the years. I've always thought it should have been left just as a river. Water activities would have still been possible.
ReplyDeleteRain? What's that?
Looks horrible. I think if I were the council/State govt I'd refill it and take the flak for that - at least it would be temporary, unlike the shitty looking pond thats there now and likely to be for months.
ReplyDeleteI sure do hope rains will come there to avoid more fires :( I hope your place is not affected by it
ReplyDeleteGreat take on teh theme Colin. Those pedal boats look sad beached like that. WHat's the chance of ains though?
ReplyDeleteor rains...
ReplyDeleteCaptain Pugwash (Mike Rann) is looking into pumping water from a disused quarry to fill in the pond. Personally I think that might be a good plan. I am sure that people from the Coorong would be keen for sea water to be pumped into Adelaide.
ReplyDeleteThat is definitely sad :( Hopefully the situation will reverse itself.
ReplyDeleteMy Photo Hunt entry is here
Thank you for stopping by! :)
I like your choice of not nautical for the theme - I almost posted one of a small lake near us that somehow drained and it sure did smell bad!

ReplyDeleteSad. It's snowing again here. Wish it were there.
ReplyDeleteSaw that on the ABC news site.
ReplyDeleteWrong, wrong and a big FAIL!
