The River Torrens which runs through Adelaide is dammed in the centre of town to form Torrens Lake, to allow for activities to take place including rowing, Popeye the tourist boat and these paddle boats. Everybody is aground at the moment with an accidental release of millions of litres of water from the dam earlier in the week. I walked around the day after and the level of the "pond" had gone down by over 2 meters. The local rag is calling it Stinky Flats. Very sad, just at the peak of Adelaide's tourist season. The lake will not be refilled until it rains again. Rain? Rain? what was that you said.
This not nautical situation is a sad metaphor for the state of the environment here in South Australia.

ReplyDeleteAn electrical fault caused it. You would think that they would have fail safe. They had to manually wind down the gates. It took over two hours.

ReplyDeleteWell, here's their chance to properly clean up all the debris that made it's way into the lake over the years. I've always thought it should have been left just as a river. Water activities would have still been possible.

Looks horrible. I think if I were the council/State govt I'd refill it and take the flak for that - at least it would be temporary, unlike the shitty looking pond thats there now and likely to be for months.

ReplyDeleteCaptain Pugwash (Mike Rann) is looking into pumping water from a disused quarry to fill in the pond. Personally I think that might be a good plan. I am sure that people from the Coorong would be keen for sea water to be pumped into Adelaide.
