Duelity: Earth's Story, Split Down the Middle | Brain Pickings

Science and religion may be odd bedfellows, but they’ve always had a shared mechanism of propagation — both are simply the product of the stories we tell ourselves and each other to explain the world, be it rationally or emotionally or mystically. So what happens when these conflicting stories are pitted against each other? That’s exactly what Duelity does in a brilliant split-screen animation telling both sides of Earth’s story, winking at the evolution of human thought and language along the way.

Math Atheists

My daughter has a bit of a maths phobia and we are working to build her confidence in that area. This rang true and made me laugh.

Thanks Liz

Osama Urged to Seek Salvation in Jesus

A Yanqeevangelist has recorded a video message to Osame Bin Laden urging him to repent his sins and convert to Christianity.

Look at you, look at your life," Keller says. "You live like a hunted goat in caves, totally dependent on a small group of people for your survival. At any moment, one of those you trust could betray you like Judas betrayed Jesus and your life would be over. The false prophet you follow, Mohammad, was poisoned to death by one of his wives.

Makes sense to me. Seems Al Jazeera didn't get the scoop on that one.

Wacky Bishops take over the Met Office.

Religious Leaders in the UK have determined that the recent flooding was gods judgement on a decaying moral society.

The bishops argue controversially that the flooding is a result of Western civilisation's decision to ignore biblical teaching.

The Rt Rev Graham Dow, Bishop of Carlisle, argued that the floods are not just a result of a lack of respect for the planet, but also a judgment on society's moral decadence.

"This is a strong and definite judgment because the world has been arrogant in going its own way," he said. "We are reaping the consequences of our moral degradation, as well as the environmental damage that we have caused."

The bishop, who is a leading evangelical, said that people should heed the stories of the Bible, which described the downfall of the Roman empire as a result of its immorality.

"We are in serious moral trouble because every type of lifestyle is now regarded as legitimate," he said.

So if you people in the UK want better weather, lift your game. Your behaviour will be judged before next summer.

Based upon the floods here in Australia, our moral fibre must also be pretty worn . Here in South Australia, we can get on our moral high horse and neigh loudly since we just got pleasantly moist.

Well Blow Me Down

Not having looked at a Bible for over 30 years, it is amazing what all those years of religious indoctrination have done for me. I do remember being able to recite all the books in the New Testament and singing Onward Christian Soldiers gustily, aged 8.

I like it that my kids are not forced to make a choice here in Australia. Religion is definitely for comparative study only.

You know the Bible 59%!

Congratulations! You know a lot about the Bible - the books, the characters, the events. You are able to remember a lot of what you have heard and read!

I wont be applying to the Monastery

No big surprise here. Thanks Tom

You scored as atheism. You are... an atheist, though you probably already knew this. Also, you probably have several people praying daily for your soul.

Instead of simply being "nonreligious," atheists strongly believe in the lack of existence of a higher being, or God.

Great Thinkers of the 21st Century

According to the Observer Elton John has said organised religion should be banned because it promotes homophobia and turns some people into "hateful lemmings".

"I would ban religion completely, even though there are some wonderful things about it,

He said he admired the teachings of Jesus Christ, but disliked religious bodies.

"The reality is that organised religion doesn't seem to work," he added.

Couldn't agree with you more Elton, but a bit harsh on lemmings. Unfortunately if all religions were banned, people would be forced to invent others.

I did not have sex with that man

That's the way love goes, babe
That's the music God made
For all the world to sing
Its never old; it grows
Losing makes me sorry
well now, "Honey, don't worry."
dont u kno i love u too
that's the way love goes. Merle Haggard

Haggards namesake, Ted, leading moral adviser to Dubya and his minders and a vocal opponent of gay marriage, resigned as president of the National Association of Evangelicals on Thursday after being accused by a male escort of having had a sexual relationship with him and using meth over a three year period.

"I did call him. I called him to buy some meth. But I threw it away. I was buying it for me but I never used it," Haggard, who looked uneasy as he sat in a car with his wife, said in an interview with KUSA TV in Colorado broadcast on CNN.

Asked if he had sex with his accuser, he replied tersely, "No I did not." He said he had sought the man out at a Denver hotel for a "massage."

This is definitely up there with Clinton not inhaling and not having sex with that woman and Jimmy Swagart's mea culpas. I suppose by an Evangelical definition, they didn't have sex. Such hypocracy. I wonder how much the person who dobbed him would have been offered to shut up, the week before the midterm elections. His timing was impecable, given the headway Republicans were making with the bonehead Kerry comments. What is it with Republicans and Catholics and the rampant gay bashing in public and undercover gay liasons and paedophilia out of the public view. So much for the Moral Majority. Seems like they are the Moral Minority.

All these God Based Quasi Politicians are tarred by the same brush with this kind of thing. No bad thing in my opinion.

Nepal and the Flag

Having spent a year in Nepal, I enjoy seeing the Nepalese Flag. It is pretty unusual in the world of national flags, with its prayer flag appearance. I used to live just down the road from Swayambunath and used to like to go and visit early in the morning. There was a real connection with the religion, with vivid colours, religious icons, monkeys and off course the temples themselves. Although I am not religious, places like that made me wonder at the power of religion for individuals.
