Natalia Avseenko, Naked Subzero Skinny Dipper and Whale Whisperer
BRAVING sub-zero temperatures, Russian diver Natalia Avseenko, 36, threw caution - and her clothes - to the wind to tame two beluga whales in a unique and controversial experiment.
She stripped naked because marine experts believe beluga whales do not like the touch of artificial materials such as diving suits.
The taming of the whales took place in the Murmansk Oblast region in the far northwest of Russia at the shore of the White Sea near the Arctic Circle branch of the Utrish Dolphinarium.
An area of the sea is enclosed to stop whales and dolphins getting out and instructors tame the mammals before they are transported to dolphinariums around the world - a practice many animal conservationists consider cruel.
Belugas have a small hump on their heads used for echo-location and it was thought that there would be more chance of striking up a rapport with them without clothes as a barrier.
Ms Avseenko took the plunge as the water temperature hit -1.5C.
The average human could die if left in sub-zero temperature sea water for just five minutes.
However, Ms Avseenko is a yoga expert and used meditation techniques to hold her breath and stay under water for an incredible 10 minutes and 40 seconds.

Guuschevchenko Hiddink goes into Hiding
After stuffing his countrymen in Euro 2008, former all Ozzie Guusssss has gone into hiding with a view to seeking asylum in the Oil Baron Football Republic of Russia.
No doubt the English will be chasing him now in their vain bid to win a football tournament after 40 years. This confirms his appeal to Sun Readers.
I never understood why they gave up on the Home International Championship. At least they could usually win a tournament that way. Not enough TV revenue to pay for those astronomical salaries I suppose.
It seems that the Celtic Cousins have seen the merits of that type of tournament.

Tommy Seebach: Musical Man of Action
With the Russian win in the Eurovision Song Contest fading in our collective consciousness, it is sobering to note that this man had his country disqualified from the next years competition after his dismal showing. Hard to imagine based on this.
Sort of a mix between Buddy Holly and Austin Powers.
Thanks Tambourine Queen
The video response on You Tube is also very funny.

Return of the Cold War?
This article caught my eye mainly for the ominous looking photograph of the Russians playing war games over the North Atlantic. A bit of real excitement for a young Biggles no doubt.
One of the three locations where the Typhoons shown in the photograph are based or will be based when the F3 Tornadoes are retired is at RAF Leuchars, just up the road from where I went to High School in St Andrews. That is also where Tiger Woods flies into when the British Golf Open is played at St Andrews. Not many private jets get to park with multi million dollar airborne deterrents.
Blognor Regis fills in the blanks.
James got me thinking about this with his interesting post on day to day living in the Former Soviet Union.
