Duelity: Earth's Story, Split Down the Middle | Brain Pickings

Science and religion may be odd bedfellows, but they’ve always had a shared mechanism of propagation — both are simply the product of the stories we tell ourselves and each other to explain the world, be it rationally or emotionally or mystically. So what happens when these conflicting stories are pitted against each other? That’s exactly what Duelity does in a brilliant split-screen animation telling both sides of Earth’s story, winking at the evolution of human thought and language along the way.

Would you trust this man to play with your children?

And did the libs pick the right school to visit.
But as the cameras moved away, Anthony Mueller, the school principal of the college was generous in his praise of Julia Gillard's $16 billion BER.
Mr Mueller said they were going to end up with a "fantastic" new arts facility thanks to the scheme, even though they had to shift a sports area to build it because of funding conditions.

Photos show dramatic shrinking of Mount Everest glaciers - Telegraph

The first was taken in 1921 by British mountaineer George Mallory, who later died trying to conquer Everest.
The Asia Society commissioned the same picture to be taken of the main Rongbuk glacier on the northern slope of Mount Everest in Tibet in 2007.
The new picture by mountaineer David Breashears show that the glacier is shrunk and withered.
A spokesman for the Asia Society said the picture was proof the ice is melting because of climate change, threatening water sources in highly populated areas of India and China.
"The photographs reveal a startling truth: the ice of the Himalaya is disappearing," he said. "They reveal an alarming loss in ice mass."

Chilcot inquiry: Iraq war increased terror threat in Britain, says former head of MI5 | Mail Online

Invading Iraq and Afghanistan has increased the terror threat in Britain, the former head of MI5 said yesterday.
In apparent revenge for being forced out in 2007, Baroness Eliza Manningham-Buller dismantled Tony Blair's case for war and Labour's claims that it would not put us at risk.
She said the conflicts had radicalised a generation of young British Muslims - substantially increasing the risk of a terrorist atrocity on UK soil.

I loved the bit about Cheney/Rumsfeld picking through the dregs to present a more hawkish basis for action. Those guys should be in jail.

At home with the Beatles: Unseen photos taken by star-struck teenager who visited the Fab Four every weekend | Mail Online

For most Beatles fans, meeting one of the Fab Four just once would have been a dream come true.
However, for one teenager in the 1960s, it became a weekly routine.
Sue Baker was just 15 when she decided to track down Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Ringo Starr and George Harrison at their homes. And she found their doorstep chats so welcoming, she continued popping in every weekend for two years.

Play is ultimate insult to Adelaide's homeless | Adelaide Now

THE State Government has spent $18,000 sponsoring a one-man play to show homeless people what it is like to be homeless.
Brooklyn Park actor and playwright Stephen House was granted $10,000 by Housing SA and $8000 by Arts SA to stage his one-man show, Appalling Behaviour , about the plight of the homeless, with performances timed to coincide with National Homeless Week from August 2 to 7.
People sleeping rough in vacant lots and parklands in the city centre were surprised when the Sunday Mail told them of the grants, suggesting the cash may have been better spent advising homeless people how to survive July's freezing temperatures and torrential downpours.
They were also unsure how they would be invited to see the play, as they do not have addresses for invitations.
Tickets to Appalling Behaviour are $18 but Housing SA says it plans to take "clients" - people without homes - to see the show for free as part of its funding sponsorship.

More nutty funding decisions. Organisations supporting homeless people and providing real services are having budgets cut.
