Democratic Republic of Congo swimmer Stany Kempompo Ngangola will compete tonight as a wildcard entrant in the 50m freestyle heats. According to the official start list, his ranking time for his heat is an astonishingly slow 1min 15 secs. The current world record is in the region of 22 seconds. I think even I, slow swimmer extraordinaire may be able to tread water faster.
I actually competed once in a swimming meet at Dundee University. I was driving the Stirling University team and they worked out that they could win the meet if I swam. Unfortunately, sort of like Bannockburn, the home team had some mates turn up to save the day. I did compete my race, last.
That said Onya Stany for scoring a free trip to Beijing and a bit of publicity. Update: 35.19 seconds, just over the requisite 30 seconds fame that we are all entitled to.

Bless him! They'll have to wait for him to get out the pool. It could disrupt the whole carefully-timed Olympic schedule!
well done for the trip and everything but i have never regarded eddie the eagle as a hero
just dont think it is a good claim to fame to be the only person in olympic history to be told you can't play because you might hurt yourself.
Lets hope there are life guards...
