How Fast Can You Blog?

Scientists are working on the even faster internet.

The internet could soon be made obsolete. The scientists who pioneered it have now built a lightning-fast replacement capable of downloading entire feature films within seconds.

At speeds about 10,000 times faster than a typical broadband connection, “the grid” will be able to send the entire Tellytubbies Rolling Stones back catalogue from Britain to Japan in less than two seconds.

Perhaps it is so that bloggers can burn out faster.

They work long hours, often to exhaustion. Many are paid by the piece — not garments, but blog posts. This is the digital-era sweatshop. You may know it by a different name: home.

A growing work force of home-office laborers and entrepreneurs, armed with computers and smartphones and wired to the hilt, are toiling under great physical and emotional stress created by the around-the-clock Internet economy that demands a constant stream of news and comment.
Scary stuff. How much did you say it cost again? Sounds a bit more in the league of the Pentagon and the like than your average blogger or blog reader.

Blogging is Like Masturbation because....

Andrew Boyd asks the important questions.

# it often gives the greatest pleasure to one person alone,
# it can feel weird doing it with someone looking over your shoulder,
# your spouse/partner/husband/girlfriend probably can’t understand why you’re doing this thing that doesn’t involve them (and you might be sneaking off to do it more often than they would like),
# sometimes you do it because it makes you feel good, and other times you just do it because you have to,

more guilt inducing squirmyness here.

Classic. I am just off to make a cup of tea blog now.

Thanks Andrew.

Australian Bloggers being taken more seriously

Australian bloggers, Mark Bahnisch from Group Blogs, Larvatus Prodeo and Nicholas Gruen from Club Troppo were featured on the ABC News Program , Saturday Extra this morning, with the ABC presenter giving some grudging acknowledgement of their role. It is too bad that these journalists have such a jaundiced view "We are all too busy to read blogs", was her constructive comment. Well your loss Madam.

Specialised blogs unlike this one are being taken more seriously by other forms of the MSM. Other examples here demonstrate the edgy relationship between the MSM, who are tip toeing into journalist commentary with comments and feedback, and serious blogs. I think that they need to learn to relax a little.

It seems pretty intuitive that this is a complementary and perhaps at some point competitive and adversary role between blogs and the MSM, just like this exists with the MSM and politicians. Reading some of the political blogs, some of the analysis is first rate. Given that the resources available to individual bloggers is pretty limited, it is amazing the high quality of material produced.

You can listen to the interview here.

Sad but True

77%How Addicted to Blogging Are You?

Apparently blogging is set to peak this year according to Gartner Research. There are now 200 million ex bloggers and all those who want to blog have already started, so the rate of growth will drop dramatically as more bloggers give up than start.

Getting Older

As I get older, I really appreciate weekends more not so much for what I can achieve, but what I cannot achieve. I really need the recovery time to function in the week ahead. Sad but true. This is especially true in the winter here, although it is pretty mild and pleasant at the moment.

There is nothing I like more than having no plans and just hanging out with the family for a couple of days. Ryan and Elizabeth also like to just stay home, but Hannah has to have some kind of social event such as shopping or visiting a friend. The sacrifices that we have to make.

Sedentary activities such as blogging have great appeal at this stage of my life. It gives me time to learn useful stuff like this. The most interesting of which is that there are more people alive now than have ever died and there is one more of us every seven seconds.

I'm a Snarky Type of a Guy

You Are a Snarky Blogger!

You've got a razor sharp wit that shines on like a crazy diamond prior to polishing.
You like to eat Weetabix for Breakfast and to drive on the wrong side of the road. If there is an unusual angle on a story, you are likely to find it, if it doesn't find you. Your favourite animal is the Tapir and you hate those tedious SEO Optimisation type blogs. Your cultural background makes you often indecipherable to your readers. You make up for this by putting a lot of pictures on your blog.
The End!

Another Pop Gun Attack on Bloggers

Who cares if people don't go to blogs for the truth. What is the truth? It is opinion and don't buy it without checking if it is important to you (rather like shares I suppose).

......the blogosphere - a virtual soapbox of citizen reporters, self-proclaimed experts and armchair commentators - is looking less like Drudge's utopian vision and more like the wild west.

Populated by anyone with a viewpoint and an internet connection, it's a daily ping-pong match of unfiltered opinion. But without the traditional checks and balances of mainstream media, can we really trust what's being said?

For me that is the great thing about it. A great free ranging discussion. Laugh a bit, think a bit, enter into discussion, write your own thoughts... You are not being paid (much if anything). Enjoy! Make up your own mind.

When I was little there was two sources of information in our house, The BBC and The Scotsman Newspaper. My dad never talked about politics having grown up in an angry disputatious communist house in West Fife. My mum kept here opinions to herself.

I am glad that there are a lot more sources and ways of interacting and receiving information now. There is obviously too much information now and we just have to sift through what we want to hear. Don't like it? Disagree? Comment or Click and then gone. The irreverent give and take of blogs are just part of the puzzle that makes up my understanding of some of the things that are going on in the world.

Lighten up Sir. It is all good clean fun.
