Spanning My Lifetime

Queen Elizabeth II's reign has spanned my lifetime. I was born in the late 1950s and the article spotted by Wolfie covers that time period and the dramatic change in life in the UK. I have lived out of the UK for almost 25 years and every now and then get a little nostalgic. I was watching the Black and White Minstrels on You Tube recently and was sad that the BBC will not release the archives for politically correct reasons. My grandparents used to watch that show every week although we thought it a bit naff and always asked to change the channel when we were staying over for the weekend.

The article along with the weather reports from this summer ensure that I continue to live outside the UK. Every now and again I entertain thoughts of going back for a while. My skills are very transferrable, but I am happy here in South Australia with my life.

The photograph of the Queen reminds me of the respect that my grandparents felt for her. We had to stop eating Christmas Lunch and listen if her Christmas Message came on the television. She is still there a very tangible sign of stability in an otherwise changing society.

Mama Clutterbuck

Elizabeth is at home with the kids this week for the holidays. She has been scanning old photographs. This is her Dads mum later in life. We have the tables and chairs in our house. It is nice to see them where they used to live. Pride of place with Mama.

Her name was Gwendolyn Blodwyn John and she was from Wales. She lives on on a shelf in our shed with her husband and Elizabeth's dad. One day we will get around to finding an appropriate spot for them. Elizabeth's other Grandmother was called Violetina Minnie. Aren't those names great? My grandfathers name was Ebeneezer. Aren't we lucky that the grandparents didn't force us, both first born's to be named after them. Thank you Thank you.
