Copernicus reburied after 467 years - The Catholic Church has a lot to answer for

Polish astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus has been reburied in Poland in a lavish ceremony 467 years after his death, media reports.

During a Roman Catholic ritual, the remains were interred beneath the altar of Frombork Cathedral in northern Poland, where the astronomer had been the canon, or head priest, and where he originally was buried in 1543.

The exact location of his grave had been lost and his remains were not conclusively identified until 2005, through the use of modern DNA testing.

Best known for his treatise, On the Revolution of the Celestial Spheres, Copernicus asserted that the Earth revolved around the sun - contrary to the medieval belief that the Earth was the centre of the universe.

The theory was viewed with suspicion by the church and his treatise was not published until 1543, the year of his death.

Eventually the theory became the cornerstone for a future generation of scientists including Kepler and Galileo, but one of its ardent advocates, Italian cleric Giordano Bruno, was burned at the stake as a heretic in 1600.

Yes Minister

The real effects of reckless driving and speeding are death, injury and damage.

Tom Koutsantonis current   (former as of today) South Australia Road Safety Minister and proud possessor of almost 30 road traffic offences including speeding, running red lights and mobile phone use.

Perhaps Transport SA will be running this promotion like they did last weekend when Channel 10 scheduled their current speeding ad with promotions for a street racing movie. Only weeks after a horrific crash involving idiots street racing on suburban streets.

Perhaps be more effective than the pretty ineffectual "Don't knudge it" advert.

Look for more action in this space, with Media Mike looking for easy political wins in the run up to next years election. Public crushings of hoon cars, very likely I would say. Don't say that Mike would allow anything to get in the way of him and re-election.

G8 Leaders Tuck In

Freshly escaped from lecturing the UK population on frugality, Gordon and his rich chums tucked into a 27 course banquet at a Tokyo McDonalds as they discussed the world food crisis.

First up Whale Nuggets and Consomme followed by a Saki Slurpy.

Hypocrites.

Pot Calling the Kettle Black

Mr I'm A Dinner Jacket is clearly an unreasonable nutball. Perhaps not as stupid as people paint him. That said, his government, whoever it is that runs it is clever in pushing back against the world community.

This was definitely a diplomatic coup for Iran and as Tom Paine summarises, the issues raised are far reaching. In the end the intervention of the Americans was likely the factor that led to the release rather than the hand wringing of Britains European buddies, who didn't want to jeopordise the Iranian economic gravy train.
