This reminded me of this.

There was this truck driver who had to deliver 500 penguins to the state zoo. As he was driving his truck through the desert, his truck breaks down. After about 3 hours, he waves another truck down and offers the driver $500 to take these penguins to the state zoo for him. The next day the original truck driver arrives in town and sees the new truck driver crossing the road with 500 penguins walking in single file behind him. The original truck driver jumps out of his truck and asks, “What’s going on? I gave you $500 to take these penguins to the zoo!” The new truck driver responds, “I did take them to the zoo. And I had enough money left over so now we re going to see a movie.”

Gilding the Olympics China Style

With all the unfolding evidence of fakery in the Opening Ceremony in Peking, on the one hand, we need to remember that it is entertainment and theatre/spectacle that people are watching. On the other hand and more sinisterly, there is the superiority complex that would allow such deception to be allowed. Having lived in Singapore for many years, none of this surprises me.

The organisers of London 2012 are already at work test marketing themes for the opening ceremony to ensure that these kinds of issues don't arise.

Gas Mask looking hooded jackets are flying off the shelves as sections of the younger UK populace adopt the zip up goggle face jacket. I wonder if these will be banned in public places aka Burquas.

Pot Black in Black and White

This morning I was thinking about all the technology that we have in our house that the kids not only are familiar with, but use every day. Computers, DVD Players, MP3 Players, Mobile Phones, Digital Cameras. The most high tech thing we had in our house when I was their age was a Kodak Box Brownie, with eight black and white photographs per roll.

It got me thinking of our first major technology purchase, our Black and White Television, purchased when I was 13. This even predated the Sinclair Scientific Calculator.

That lead me to thinking about Pot Black. I used to love to watch this show, a show ironically developed to showcase the new potential of colour television. It took a trained eye to tell the difference between the pink and the blue when they were out of position. Legendary commentator Ted Lowe, aware that not all viewers had colour televisions, said the player is "going for the yellow ball by the sidepocket - and for those in black and white, it's next to the blue."

I never did like it as much in colour. So much for modern technology.
