We British like a drink, and never more so than at Christmas. For the overwhelming majority of us, booze is an essential consolation for the stresses of our daily lives. It’s part of our culture, which is why most of us mark every single significant occasion with a glass of something cheering.
We sympathise, don’t we, with the psychologist William James, who wrote, in The Varieties of Religious Experience (1902), that “sobriety diminishes, discriminates, and says no” whereas “drunkenness expands, unites, and says yes”. He believed that alcohol stimulates our mystical faculties and helps to bring us into contact with transcendent truths: it takes us away from “the cold facts and dry criticisms of the sober hour”, he said, and “brings its votary from the chill periphery of things to its radiant core”.
We experience glimpses of this “radiant core” when we drink in company; by melting away the inhibitions that keep us Brits so buttoned up, drink allows us to get to know one another and to feel the warm glow of intimacy. This is one reason adolescents take to the bottle with such eagerness.

A Conservative MP who attended a party where friends allegedly chanted Nazi slogans and dressed up in SS uniforms, has apologised for "any offence that was caused" at the event.
Aidan Burley used the social networking site, Twitter, to say he did "deeply regret inappropriate behaviour by some guests at a stag party" he attended and was "extremely sorry for any offence that was caused".
The apology, posted at 12.30pm on Sunday, was sent to the MP's 385 followers but was picked up by the Twitter community and passed around to many others. It failed, however, to assuage those outraged by his behaviour, with many continuing to call for his sacking and resignation.
The 32-year-old Cannock Chase MP was dining at a restaurant in the ski resort of Val Thorens, at Savoie, in the French Alps. Some of his 12 friends in the restaurant chanted "Hitler, Hitler, Hitler", according to the Mail on Sunday.
The paper claimed that the MP, who was elected in 2010, sipped wine while at least one man sitting near him goaded a French waiter, asking: "You are from Germany? No, you must be from Austria, then?" and "Are you insulting his Reich?"
Burley was filmed raising his glass in a toast before, the paper claimed, another guest beside him made a speech, in which he said: "Let's raise a toast to Tom for organising the stag do, and if we're perfectly honest, to the ideology and thought process of the Third Reich."
The party was said to have moved on to a British-themed pub, where partygoers adopted thick German accents and chanted: "Mein Fuhrer! Mein Fuhrer! Mein Fuhrer!", "Himmler! Himmler! Himmler!" and "Eichmann! Eichmann! Eichmann!"

Queensland Nutball Creationists hijack lessons and teach schoolkids man and dinosaurs walked together

Primary school students are being taught that man and dinosaurs walked the Earth together and that there is fossil evidence to prove it.
Fundamentalist Christians are hijacking Religious Instruction (RI) classes in Queensland despite education experts saying Creationism and attempts to convert children to Christianity have no place in state schools.
Students have been told Noah collected dinosaur eggs to bring on the Ark, and Adam and Eve were not eaten by dinosaurs because they were under a protective spell.
Critics are calling for the RI program to be scrapped after claims emerged Christian lay people are feeding children misinformation.
About 80 per cent of children at state primary schools attend one half-hour instruction a week, open to any interested lay person to conduct.
Many of the instructors are from Pentecostal churches.
Education Queensland is aware that Creationism is being taught by some religious instructors, but said parents could opt out.
Australian Secular Lobby president Hugh Wilson said children were ostracised and discriminated against if they were pulled out of the class.
In many cases, the RI lay people were not supervised by teachers.
Kings Christian Church youth worker Dustin Bell said he taught "about creation" in Sunshine Coast schools.

Over on the Freakonomics blog, Stephen Dubner noted that Amazon was selling the Caucasian version of a dollhouse for much more than the African-American version. As he notes, while this looks bad for Amazon, it's ultimately caused by different sellers charging different prices (with Amazon selling one item themselves, and a third party supplying the other).
However, at least one seller is selling both items themselves, and charging far more for the white version. See them both below:
