Patient trapped in a 23-year 'coma' was conscious all along | Mail Online

A man thought by doctors to be in a vegetative state for 23 years was actually conscious the whole time, it was revealed last night.

Student Rom Houben was misdiagnosed after a car crash left him totally paralysed.

He had no way of letting experts, family or friends know he could hear every word they said.

Quite astonishing. Based upon my experience with mental health professionals, this does not surprise me in the slightest.

Wow, that is scary in a "but for the grace of God go I" type of thing.

What do you mean about mental health experts?

So how did they find out? Did he suddenly be able to move or speak? Or did someone actually stop and ask him how's he doing and then listen when his mouth moved? I'm really surprised that no one tried to communicate with him in all that time.....

This is really a miracle..
