Play is ultimate insult to Adelaide's homeless | Adelaide Now

THE State Government has spent $18,000 sponsoring a one-man play to show homeless people what it is like to be homeless.
Brooklyn Park actor and playwright Stephen House was granted $10,000 by Housing SA and $8000 by Arts SA to stage his one-man show, Appalling Behaviour , about the plight of the homeless, with performances timed to coincide with National Homeless Week from August 2 to 7.
People sleeping rough in vacant lots and parklands in the city centre were surprised when the Sunday Mail told them of the grants, suggesting the cash may have been better spent advising homeless people how to survive July's freezing temperatures and torrential downpours.
They were also unsure how they would be invited to see the play, as they do not have addresses for invitations.
Tickets to Appalling Behaviour are $18 but Housing SA says it plans to take "clients" - people without homes - to see the show for free as part of its funding sponsorship.

More nutty funding decisions. Organisations supporting homeless people and providing real services are having budgets cut.

Leith diners enjoy a grin and tonic with Buckfast ice cream - Edinburgh Evening News

IT'S been blamed for boozy violence and derided as the drunkard's favourite.
Now Buckfast is top of the menu for diners in Leith, where a restaurant is using the fortified tonic wine in its new range of summer ice creams.

Englishman, Scotsman and an Irishman, or E:S:I, is serving up Buckfast ripple ice cream to its lunchtime customers - and despite the drink's reputation, it's going down a storm with discerning diners.

More mid winter colour in the Southern Suburbs of Adelaide

Captured these on my walkabout this morning. July and August (midwinter) are the most interesting time of year for plants in South Australia. Also the landscape is green with all the rain.

Sick of Soccer? Why not try Camel Racing or Yachting in Central Australia

Camels are not as they seem: the dedicated ships of the desert destined to serve their master. These magnificent beasts can easily spit over three metres, have been known to bite, snarl and generally prefer to do things at their own pace.

The riders are either heroes or crazy! Either way, all of these bridled passions make for dynamic viewing, with camels easily conquering the riders during the day!

The start of the race, with up to 15 camels, is confusing ... some off in good stride, others still grounded, some going backwards; it's a nightmare for riders and handlers, but spectacular for spectators - a camel in full stride needs the rider to hang on for dear life!

And it came for a good old Aussie bet!

The first Camel Race was run in 1970 in the dry Todd River Bed as a bet between two mates, Noel Fullerton and Keith Mooney-Smith, and was an added attraction at the Alice Springs Centenary Year Celebrations.

The Camel race proved so popular and hilarious that plans were made by the Lions Clubs to hold the event on an annual basis.

More than 200 sailors from around the country have converged on Lake Killamperpunna, 520 miles north of Adelaide, with catamarans, trimarans, speedboats and even waterskis.

Normally a parched dust bowl, the lake has not been sailed on since 1989 but thanks to the rains, which have transformed the desert into lush wetlands teeming with plants and bird life, the water is up to 9ft deep in places and perfect for sailing.

North Korean team will be sent to coal mines as punishment, reports say | Adelaide Now

Unfortunately, crazed dictator Kim Jong-il chose the 7-0 mauling at the hands of Portugal to be the first football game ever broadcast in the impoverished communist nation.

"The Portuguese won the game and now have four points," the Korean Central Broadcasting commentator said at the conclusion of the match. "We are ending our live broadcast now." It then cut to factory workers and engineers praising the Dear Leader.

Seems the result may not have tallied too well with Kim Jong-il's narrative that North Korea is a socialist paradise populated by athletic supermen.

Moon Ki-Nam, a former North Korean coach who fled the country in 2004, told reporters: “The players and coach are rewarded with huge houses when they win. But they have to atone for losing by being sent to work in the coal mines.”

The glorious leader will have to go too since he reportedly coached from his mobile phone.

Kim Jong-Su, the general secretary of the North Korean FA, has said the Dear Leader gave 'in-depth guidance' on how to develop the game in the country and the coach himself has claimed he received regular tactical advice during matches, apparently using mobile phones that are not visible to the naked eye."
