Fair Go for Mohamed Haneef

This is looking scandalously unfair. Apparently the SIM card was not in the car and I read somewhere that it expired a year ago. Is being related to somebody grounds for being considered a terrorist? What about relatives of murderers. Are they guilty and complicit because they were related to them. Are Defence Attorneys complicit?

After September 11, all of Osama Bin Laden's relatives were flown out of the country politely very soon after the event because of their contacts with the US Government and the friendly relationships with Saudi Arabia.

Why is this Indian Citizen, a Doctor, who was providing a valuable service here in Australia treated like a GITMO Detainee?

This does not reflect well on Australia and specifically the Howard Government and more specifically Kevin Andrews and Darth Ruddock.

Is this episode, part of this plan?

Update: The Government is looking to deport Haneef to get out of this mess. This article outlines some of the powers Australia's Anti Terror Laws gives to the Government.

Over at the Road to Surfdom, Ken Lovell has the scoop on the new requirements for suspicious visitors to Australia.

Hi Colin! I would like to draw your attention to a popular but inaccurate belief about the Bin Laden family being "flown out of the country politely the next day".

I do agree however that it seems Mohamed Haneef is being unfairly treated.

Immediately I heard of the charge against Haneef I thought they (AFP and government) have got to be joking if that flimsy connection is all they have on him after the best part of 2 weeks investigation. Since then of course, even the flimsiest of pretexts on which the charges were based has fallen apart. I bet you the most important thing that the government is thinking about right now is "how the hell do we get out of this mess?". I would not want to be in Mick Keelty's shoes ... a scapegoat is needed and he's the obvious candidate. Mind you, the way this is panning out, he should resign - as should Ruddock and Andrews.

I love the blogging community for keeping me honest. I am a bit of the seat of the pants blogger and often wade in a bit too quickly.

Thanks to both of you.

I think you have got it all wrong. Just think about this, Dr Haneef trained in medical school in India with his cousins who were caught in Britain. They would all been exposed to the same ideology that caused his cousins to do what they did.

Don't you know that Al Qaeda are using intellectuals now to 'infiltrate' the western world as these professionals can obtain work and permanent residence visas as the western governments are more vigilant after Sep 11.

Does Australia want to wait for an ugly incident to occur before the civil libertarians, leftists, democrats, greenies wake up from their slumber. Talk is cheap, it is easy to criticise the immigration minister, AFP , public prosecutor who are all trying their very best to make tough decisions and make themselves count. I would imagine some of the so called politicians being first to critise what the government, AFP, DPP are trying to do. Can't imagine any of them making any sorts of decisions if they were in power as they would probably be too incompetent to do anyting to protect Australia.

Also look at the evidence. He was leaving Australia in a hurry on a one way ticket to India and also the latest news about the conversation in the chatroom with his brother. Why wouldn't they talk on the phone. Was it because they were afraid the conversation would be listened to.

Wake up Australians. The anti terrorism laws on detaining suspects are VERY MILD compared to some other countries where they could be detained without trial for years and there is not so much transparency like we have in Australia. I think anybody who commits crime or are thinking of committing crime in Australia are having it too easy.

The government needs to take all necessary steps to ensure the evidence is sufficient. Imagine going through 30,000 pages of downloaded material in Urdu ( the government would need to find an army of people who understand Urdu to translate the pages) I am sure the leftists would use them for for making fire and say you'll be right until a bomb set off in their own backyard.

Aussies are so soft. Don't you know what you are dealing with
