I must have been the last person to hear about John Smeaton. Anyway I know now. His Wikipedia page, which is being considered for deletion by the way, is John Smeaton (baggage handler), because some other long dead person has that page.
He is pretty famous, with his own website and a Facebook Tribute with over one thousand members.

I've got another heartwarming story for you that you may not have heard, since you're in Australia....
I think this was a few months ago. In New York, on a subway platform, a man had a seizure and fell into the path of an oncoming train.
So a bystander-- a single father to two little girls, no less-- left his daughters with a companion and jumped on the guy, rolling into a little rut just under the train, covering him with his body. The train passed over them.
They were both unharmed.
I think he got a medal later, once the authorities tracked him down. It made my day.
I feel sure that I would do the same thing. Possibly not the all fists flying stuff. You can't really tell until you are in a situation like that.
I think I was probably the last person to hear! I thought he was incredible. None of us knows what we would do. I think few of us would be heroic.
