Solar Panels for Everyone

Australia with some of the highest potential for solar power has a research breakthrough, which is being commercialised immediately, with the development of significantly cheaper solar panels. Rather than waiting for up to twenty years to pay off, the new panels may pay off in less than five years. The key is to reduce the amount of silicon by 90 percent using clever tricks. The new panels can be shaped more creatively and can even be placed in windows.

I think some of these in every back yard would be better than a nuclear plant in our back yard.

Totally agree. Don't know why Aussie science hasn't come up with this before.

I agree too. Seems a great idea.

But would this win over the sceptics we have in this country? Is this something you have Down Under too?

My colleague has just had solar panels fitted at great expense. he doesn't expect them to pay for themselves ever. I'd better not tell him about this new invention ...

I don't know why all new homes aren't built with solar panels included.

I think that the key issue is that solar power is never going to cover all the baseload, but that it can make a big difference if collectively small numbers of consumers can contribute or be neutral when things get hairy, which they do here when we have over 40 degree days. South Australia is just about to build two very expensive plants to meet new demand. This may not tackle the big picture, but it can help to ameliorate dramatic effects.

In answer to Ellee, the Howard Government were completely sceptical until the Stern Report, the drought and other things. They became politically expedient converts pronto. Australia also has great potential in wind power. I think that things have changed, but Australia also has one of the largest resources of coal and it is likely that this will continue to be the main source of power. The debate on nuclear power is just getting going. The Howard Government are just about the only group to go to bat on this one, as long as the plants are not built in their constituencies.

I have a (hopefully not misguided) faith in technology and the market to find new and better solutions for tapping into energy.

We have to get away from oil for lots of reasons and one day fission might be viable.

Putting a windmill on your house is a silly idea though.
