Koala Watch

Our neighbourhood Magpies were squawking early this morning. I went out to investigate and found that our neighbourhood koala had taken up residence in the large tree just across the road. The owner of the property said that she was moving around and using all the trees on his property. I was finally able to get a photograph.

For other interesting garden nature observations, go to Richard Havers' site where a family of owls are being observed.

Koalas are pretty boring since they sleep most of the day. Owls on the other hand seem to do more dramatic things. Koalas are very cute however. This one has a baby, but it is out of sight. I learned from Hannah's teacher that Koala babies don't have cute marsupial names.

There are a lot more koalas in urban neigbourhoods as they search for food. Meanwhile on Kangaroo Island there are serious proposals to cull them. It is hard to believe that such a docile animal could be so destructive on an ecosystem.

Ahhh, nice shot there Colin :)

The poor old koala's really get the rough end of the pineapple at times.
I think, from memory, the K.I koala's are free from diseases so it would have made sense (to me at least) to transfer some of the immature ones into areas where disease has wiped out the population and provide a bigger gene pool for breeding, than culling them :(

Well, Colin, we were so excited to see koalas in the nearby zoo when we were in Sydney. That you have then literally in your back yard is tremendous!! I'm glad you got all your needs off your chest at my blog - I wish I could fulfill some of them... I could get you new glasses, and of course some whiskey but a new show? money? Gee I don't know but please don't give up your dream to be a juggler. I have a friend who left a lucrative job to be the ringmaster of a flea circus... ;)

They are such wonderful looking cuddly things but I always heard they were bad tempered and have very sharp claws. Killing them does not seem right but I guess it's called environmental management or some such thing. I know they cull the bears in the national parks here on occasion and then there's the wolves!

Yes I am pretty sure they are not too cuddly. I still have my koala from childhood which was sent to me by my Australian relatives. It is very beat up, but about the only thing I have in our house from that period of my life.

I have direction in my life after doing that meme.

Thanks for your measured informative comment. I will do what I can to share the koala love in our neighbourhood.

I like to all a touch of colour when taking care of Christmas card "envelopes".
Is it challenging to add a little "clip art" candy walking stick
or Christmas Bells or Minature Christmas plant when using
tags? Believe I will start utilizing tags this year.

Many thanks!
Ellen.
