Spanning My Lifetime

Queen Elizabeth II's reign has spanned my lifetime. I was born in the late 1950s and the article spotted by Wolfie covers that time period and the dramatic change in life in the UK. I have lived out of the UK for almost 25 years and every now and then get a little nostalgic. I was watching the Black and White Minstrels on You Tube recently and was sad that the BBC will not release the archives for politically correct reasons. My grandparents used to watch that show every week although we thought it a bit naff and always asked to change the channel when we were staying over for the weekend.

The article along with the weather reports from this summer ensure that I continue to live outside the UK. Every now and again I entertain thoughts of going back for a while. My skills are very transferrable, but I am happy here in South Australia with my life.

The photograph of the Queen reminds me of the respect that my grandparents felt for her. We had to stop eating Christmas Lunch and listen if her Christmas Message came on the television. She is still there a very tangible sign of stability in an otherwise changing society.

Carry on Your Majesty.

Here endeth my 2000th post. May my blog reign on in the rapidly changing blog kingdom.

Lordy I remember my parents watching the Black and White Minstrels and our Christmas meal timed around Her Maj's Christmas message.
Going to be very odd when she's no longer on the throne!

And what will the next fifty years bring as progress grows exponentially?
It's quite a sobering thought when you realize you have lived longer outside your homeland than you did in it but I know once a Scot always a Scot.
Congratulations on your 2000th post. A very prestigious achievement.

oh dear! I remember having to sit quietly while my parents watched the Black and White Minstrels and the Billy Cotton Bandshow. I found Christmas Day dinners always had to end in good time to watch Lizzie.Brings back memories, that.

I don't think you would like thr country so much now. I have been out 18 years and would not return for anything and I wish our girls were here not there.
Ah, the Monochrome Minstrels... I'm older than you.
I am also a Republican.

Yes the Black and White Minstrels were just not as dramatic once they were in colour. It is amazing to me that they were one of the first shows that the BBC put in colour, a huge investment and now they wont even publish some of the series. Come on BBC. Forget the PC stuff. That show was a cultural milestone.
