Ocean Rubbish Dump Bigger than Australia Expands

A massive plastic mass of rubbish is slowly accumulating in the Pacific Ocean. The floating dump, bigger than Australia is controlled by trade winds in the area between San Francisco and Hawaii.

Great diet for marine life in that area and almost impossible to fix according to experts.

Believe it or not, this is crochet. There is a large project to make woollen coral reefs. Pretty sad that we have to replace the natural marine environment with coloured sheep fleece because of our love affair with plastic. Having done quite a bit of scuba diving, it is sad that we are losing some of these very valuable and very beautiful ecosystems.

It's appalling and a testament to the profligacy of the wasteful continent there.

I heard of this dump just last week: a one sentence mention. I can't believe that nations are not combining their power (a coalition of the caring?) to solve this. And the woolen reefs: they are actually IN the ocean? Do they even last?

No I was joking about the woolen reefs in the sea. It is a collaborative project to recreate the look of a reef to bring attention to the issue. One of the links in the post relates to this issue.

I heard about this monstrosity recently too. How the hell do you keep something this size 'under wraps'!?

A tribute to wasteful consumerism. This is one of those 'externalities' they gloss over in economics.

omfg - that is disgusting. I think we should start costing ameliorative (sorry, count james d'estaing put me in the mood to talk like a wanker) measures in terms of Iraq-weeks.

WTF?

Well, America is spending an average of $330 million/day on the war in Iraq. So if this is a $4 billion problem (for example) then it needs a 2 Iraq-week solution.

But on the non-lighter side, we are a filthy foocking (ah kin spiick sco'ish!) virus on this planet and must either heal or die ASAP.

Thank God I saw that pic Colin. I know this stuff but until faced with visual and fact together, I am unable to fully compute it.

WHO throws their plastic into the drains or sea? WHO??????

I like where I live. Would you stop bombing my home please. Destroy the Great Barrier Reef and we destroy ourselves. I agree with my typing is not activism mate, "heal or die."

Here via the Carnival of Australia and I'd really like to keep visiting so keep your plastic to yourself will you, domestic terrorists.

Just heard the information about Petite. I'm so offended right now. I am a life long Yankees fan and am not feeling too good about their possibilities this year.
